Revolutionary War Militia Musket Powder Horn

Revolutionary War Militia Musket Powder Horn

$395.00Price

Great example of a Rev War musket sized powder horn that saw heavy use during the war. It features the owner's initials carved into the body and four crosses carved into the wood plug. The initials are interesting; they look like an "I" with a line carved across them. These are actually the letter "J" which was not added to the modern alphabet until the 15th century and was not readily accepted in the colonies until the late 18th century. Adding the line across an "I" turned it into a "J" in 18th century America. The four crosses carved into the wood plug indicate the owner's Christian faith and connection to divine belief. This is a true musket sized horn designed for campaigning. It is a sturdy horn that is 12" long across the curve and 16" along the curve. The wood plug is 3" wide. It is in very good antique condition with untouched deep patina and the remnants of the leather suspension strap tacked onto the plug. This horn is very representative of what the average American patriot carried through the war.
